Award-Winning Paper on Fire Engineering

20.06.2023

The Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG) is proud to announce that a groundbreaking research paper authored by Jens Steemann Kristensen (Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology – DBI), Benjamin Jacobs (student at the University of Edinburgh) and Grunde Jomaas (ERA Chair holder of the FRISSBE project at ZAG), has been honored with the esteemed 2023 Harry C. Bigglestone Award.

The award, presented by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is given for a paper published in Fire Technology and it recognizes exceptional contributions to the field of fire protection concepts as well as communication of these concepts.

The winning paper, entitled “Experimental Study of the Fire Dynamics in a Semi-enclosure Formed by Photovoltaic (PV) Installations on Flat Roof Constructions,” which is available here, stood out among numerous submissions, solidifying its position as the premier piece in the realm of fire technology. The research sheds new light on the fire dynamics in semi-enclosed spaces, specifically in relation to photovoltaic installations on flat roofs.

The award acknowledges the significance of this remarkable study and it is a testament to the exceptional expertise and dedication demonstrated by the authors. In addition to this outstanding achievement, the authors were honoured at the 2023 NFPA Conference & Expo event in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 18, 2023. The award was accepted by the fist author, Jens Steemann Kristensen.

ZAG extends its warmest congratulations to all authors for their remarkable achievement. Their unwavering commitment to advancing fire engineering and protecting communities is an inspiration to us all.
